Objective:
Deliver an independent, data-driven ranking of the world's leading ecommerce websites using publicly available traffic data. Only sites whose core business is online retail and digital commerce are included.
Inclusion Criteria:
Included are ecommerce retailers and marketplaces where the primary focus is online shopping and order fulfillment. Pure classifieds, content-only sites, corporate brochures without active ecommerce, and payment-only providers are excluded.
Regional Sites Are Separate Entries (No Consolidation):
Regional storefronts and ccTLD variants (e.g., amazon.de
, amazon.co.uk
) are listed as distinct platforms with their own ranks and indices. Metrics are not combined across regions to highlight market-specific performance and effectiveness.
Core Ranking Factor – Website Traffic:
The ranking is formed based on website traffic assessment from multiple authoritative sources. The evaluation combines data from four independent sources for accuracy and completeness.
Data Sources:
Handling of Missing Data:
If a site is missing from any source, the missing value is estimated from available sources with a 10% conservative adjustment to avoid optimistic bias.
Ranking Scale:
Each website receives a proprietary index from 999 (maximum) to 0 (minimum), computed from a weighted combination of traffic metrics across all sources.
Verification and Updates:
All sources are public and auditable. Updates are performed regularly to reflect changes in ecommerce traffic patterns. Only sites verifiable through public traffic data are included.
Factor | Detail |
---|---|
DNS Traffic (Umbrella) | Signals current demand via passive DNS resolution. |
Aggregated Rank (Tranco) | 30-day blended rank for stability and comparability. |
Link Authority (Majestic) | Referring subnet diversity as a robustness proxy. |
Traffic Analytics (Similarweb) | Visit estimates and engagement metrics. |
Regional Separation | Each ccTLD/storefront is ranked independently (no cross-crediting). |
Data Completeness | Conservative estimation applied to fill occasional gaps. |
Note: Treating regional storefronts as separate entries enables clean benchmarking by country/region and isolates execution differences across markets.
